ANDY GRAY'S ENGLAND VERDICT
|
I THINK it was an ideal start for England. It wasn't quite a ten out of ten performance, but let's not forget that it was the first match of the tournament for England and the players would have been nervous. They hadn't played together for quite some time, but there's no doubt that they did everything asked of them. They scored a couple of goals and they didn't concede any, so Glenn will have gone back to La Baule absolutely delighted with what happened yesterday. The players came good at the right time, so you can't ask for any more. On the Beckham situation', I don't think Darren Anderton did magnificently and I still think it was a surprising choice to pick him over the United man. Darren didn't supply the crosses he might have done and if this was a selection that was actually Glenn's choice, rather than something brought on by injury, then I think it was a surprise decision; but there's no doubt that there were more pluses than minuses from what happened out there. Alan Shearer was bright and alert, the midfield had a combative edge and the lads at the back performed well. I thought Graeme Le Saux was excellent and there were other good performances, even though the England players were confident rather than brilliant. Third world football is quite good, but I'm not sure that teams like Tunisia will really pose a threat. If anything, I think the England players would have been surprised at how easy it was. There were a couple of scares for them in the last 20 minutes and I suppose certain players will be criticised for missing chances that would have put the game beyond any doubt, but at the end of the day no-one can deny that the team played well. On another day, when the ball was running for him, Paul Scholes could have had a hat-trick. And I think he'll score more than he misses in France. What's brilliant for England is that they now don't have to win their two remaining group games to progress - five points will be enough. Those three points take the pressure off England and I think it's highly unlikely that they won't go through to the next stage now. Romania are strong and experienced and Colombia on their day can beat anyone, but I believe that if they don't do anything stupid, then England are as good as there.
